Gutter Maintenance 101

Your gutters are important to prevent leaks in your roof and water damage to your siding. But, like anything else in your home, it is important to maintain them properly. If your gutters are clogged, cracked, or leaking, they can’t protect your roof and siding the way they should. At Pro Exteriors, gutters, roofing, and siding are what we do, so we know how closely connected they are. Damage to one will soon lead to damage to the others. When you need “gutters near me,” we are the team to call.

Follow these basic gutter maintenance tips to keep your home protected from water damage.

Clean the gutters regularly.

The easiest way to keep your gutter system in good shape is to clean them regularly. Leaves, needles, and other debris fall into your gutters, even if there hasn’t been a storm or high winds. You’ll be able to prevent clogs if you clear debris from the gutter system. You should clean your gutter system at least twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall. To be extra conscientious about it, you can check on your gutters after heavy rain.

Check the downspouts for clogs.

While you’re cleaning your gutters, you should check your downspouts for clogs. If the downspouts get clogged with dirt and leaves, the water can’t flow out and the gutters overflow. It can often be difficult to see down into your downspouts, so stick the nozzle of your garden hose into the downspout to test the flow. If you have a pressure nozzle, you can use the water pressure to clear out any clogs.

Consider adding gutter guards and downspout extensions.

To keep larger debris like leaves out of the gutter, you can install gutter guards. Gutter guards have their pros and cons, but if you have a lot of trees near your house, they can make cleaning the gutters easier. To keep water away from your foundation, you can also add downspout extensions. Many downspouts only have splash blocks, which direct water a few feet away from your house. Heavy rain can dislodge these splash blocks and water can pool around your foundation if you don’t check and reposition them. Downspout extensions are flexible tubes that you can add to your downspouts to direct the water further away from your house.   gutters near me
